A brief history of Toronto
In the 1600s a Frenchman, Etienne Brule was sent into a wild area that was still french at the time. He then discovered the portage and river routes that connected the St. Lawrence River with Lake Huron, potentially Lakes Superior and Michigan, and ultimately Lake Ontario. The native Hurons called this area between Don and Humber „Toronto” which is believed to mean „meeting place”. The name of the village then became Teiaiagon and it became the site of a French trading post. After the Seven Years’ War, it became York in 1793 (which is now a district in Toronto). The city formally became Toronto on March 6, 1834. The population started to increase and after the second world war, foreigners started pouring into the Toronto area, which was the main starting point of the increasing diversity in Toronto.
